Dear WordCamp Europe Organizers,
My name is Shahjahan Jewel, and I am writing to express a concern regarding the upcoming WordCamp Europe 2025, scheduled to take place in Basel, Switzerland from June 5th to 7th.
WordCamp Europe is the largest WordCamp in the world, attracting participants from diverse cultures and backgrounds across the globe. As a dedicated participant in WordCamp Europe for the past three years and a regular attendee of various other WordCamps, including WordCamp Asia and several country-level events, I feel it is important to address an issue with the chosen dates.
As you may be aware, Eid al-Adha, one of the most important religious holidays in the Muslim calendar, falls on the same dates as the planned event. This overlap poses a serious conflict for Muslim attendees, including myself.
Inclusiveness has always been at the heart of WordCamps. These events, by the community and for the community, consistently embody the values of diversity and inclusivity.
WordCamp Europe has exemplified this ethos countless times, fostering an environment where everyone, regardless of their background, feels welcomed and valued.
It is this spirit of inclusiveness that has made WordCamps a beacon for the global WordPress community, and we must continue to uphold these values in every aspect of our planning and execution.
I understand that finding a suitable date for such a large event is challenging, particularly when considering venue availability and logistical arrangements. However, it is crucial to recognize the importance of inclusivity and respect for all community members’ religious and cultural practices.
Imagine the scenario where a flagship WordCamp is scheduled on December 25th, Christmas Day. The implications and emotional impact on those who observe the holiday would be profound and undoubtedly met with similar concern.
As an organizer of local WordCamps and someone who has built personal connections with many of you, I know the dedication and hard work that goes into planning these events. It is with this understanding and respect that I urge you to reconsider the dates for WordCamp Europe 2025. Adjusting the schedule to avoid conflict with Eid al-Adha would not only demonstrate a commitment to inclusivity but also ensure that all members of our diverse community can participate fully and without compromise.
I appreciate your attention to this matter and hope that a resolution can be found that upholds the values of respect, diversity, and inclusivity that our WordPress community prides itself on.
Thank you for your consideration.
